Becoming an ocean steward: youth engagement with marine sustainability in the digital age.

Phd Overview

I have always been interested in the ocean and spend a disproportionate amount of time in the water…
If you are reading this page you too are interested in the ocean and hopefully you are interested in taking part in my PhD study, which I am conducting as a student of the University of Exeter, supported by the Central Caribbean Marine Institute. You can read more about me here:

    Youth and Ocean Stewardship

My Phd will seek to understand how young people engage with marine sustainability through social media. Creating a sustainable future via increased ocean stewardship is one of the biggest challenges facing society. The emergence of social media, as part of our everyday lives, has been identified as ‘hopeful’ in connecting people to ocean sustainability issues. Yet there is limited understanding on how social media connects us to marine sustainability issues.

This study will focus on how marine sustainability social media videos contribute to ocean stewardship. Stewardship is the ‘act of taking care of something’.

There will be two elements of the study that require public participation. Participants need to be between 16-24 to take part. The first stage is a digital diary study, which will include 30 people.

6-8 participants from the diary study will then be asked to take part in a 3 series focus group (stage two), to get a greater understanding of whether social media is effective at creating ocean stewards.

All the research will be conducted online, so no traveling!

If you are interested in taking part, then please click here to read the participant information forms, then email me at CH959@exeter.ac.uk for a link to the consent forms.

    Becoming a Study Participant

Taking Part –
What You Need To Know

Thank you so much for your interest in taking part in this study.

There are two stages of the study that I am inviting participants between the ages of 16-24 to get involved in, which is the Digital Diary and the Focus Groups (full overview below).
I am now reciting for the Digital Diary element of the study.

Below are the forms that give all the study details. The information sheet explains what will happen and why. There is also a consent form, which explains how your data will be handled, how you can remove yourself from the study and finally, you will asked to give consent to take part. If you want to take part in the study, I will need signed consent forms to begin. Once you have filled in your form, please email them to me: Ch959@exeter.ac.uk.

Digital Diary

The digital diary study will include 30 participants. Over a two week period, participants will be asked to save video links from their social media feeds that link to marine sustainability issues (how to protect the ocean, what is effecting the ocean, why we need a healthy ocean etc) and note down how they make you feel, in a diary. The digital diary will be managed via the Evernote, that can be set up and accessed from your phone, tablet or laptop. You will be given instructions on how to set up your diary and what should be recorded. The study will take 2 weeks and it is super easy!

Digital Diary Timings

If you would like to take part, please get in touch by 6th June 2024. The diary study will begin on the 17th June 2024

6-8 participants will then be asked to join a series of focus groups, that will take place in w/c 22nd July 2024 (see below for Focus Group information).

Focus Groups

The focus groups will include a smaller group of participants (6-8), and this element of the study will seek to understand how participants respond to and engage with marine sustainability videos on social media. 3 focus groups will take place, hosted by Kate Holden on Zoom. Recruitment for the Focus Groups will take place in June 2024, following the diary study. Once you have filled in your form, please email them to me: Ch959@exeter.ac.uk.
